Our Symbols and Traditions

Greek Letters, Colors, and Shield
Lavender, Carolina Blue, and Black are the official colors of Theta Nu Xi.
The Sorority’s shield, created by the Founding Monarchs, has special significance for members of Theta Nu Xi. A replica of the shield has been made into a pin that is only to be worn by initiated members of the Sorority.

Symbol
The Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly

Line Names and Numbers
Each member has a line name and line number. Each group of new members initiated together within a chapter also has a collective line name that represents the group. These names are unique to each member and each line, and they hold special meaning for our sisters. The significance of the names and numbers are personal and private, only to be shared amongst members of the Sorority.

Emergence
An emergence is the public presentation of a chapter’s newest initiates. It is a celebration of the new members, the Sorority and chapter history, and it also highlights the individual personality of each line. Most often, though not always, our chapters choose a performance format to present their new members to campus, friends, and their families.

National Philanthropy
Girl Up
Girl Up was founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010, and continues to work across a global community of partners to achieve gender equality worldwide. Girl Up engages girls to stand up for girls, empowering each other and changing our world. Girls from around the world generate real, tangible change through our leadership platform. What began as a campaign for American girls, Girl Up has quickly become a border less movement, with nearly half a million supporters and advocates from the U.S. and around the world.

Theta Woman
~Soror Ayodele Carroo, Alpha Chapter, Spring 1998(c) 1998 Theta Nu Xi Multicultural, Sorority, Inc.
Loyal to the cocoon
From where she comes
The Theta Woman rises out of a lavender dawn
To proudly bridge the gaps in her world
With her butterfly wings
With honesty and courage
She lives and loves without conditions
Surrendering to her beauty and power
She gives and receives freely
Remembering her vision, her purpose, her heart
Creator of her own definition
She inspires those around her
To be proud and selfless
To give unselfishly over and over again
Loving herself as she loves others
The butterfly transcends
Taking others with her in her flight
